Applied Behaviour analysis is the science of behavior, with a history extending back to the early 20th century. Its guiding philosophy is behaviorism, which is based on the premise that attempts to improve the human condition through behavior change (e.g., education, behavioral health treatment) will be most effective if behavior itself is the primary focus. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is largely based on behavior and its consequences; techniques generally involve teaching individuals more effective ways of behaving through positive reinforcement and working to change the social consequences of existing behavior. Treatment approaches based on ABA have been empirically shown to be effective in a wide variety of areas. (BACB)
There are many types of treatments available. These treatments can generally be broken down into behavioral, developmental, educational, social-relational, and psychological categories, to mention a few. Although some treatments involve more than one approach. However, the behavioral approach focuses on changing behaviors by understanding what happens before and after the behavior. Behavioral approaches have the most evidence for treating symptoms of ASD. They have become widely accepted among educators and healthcare professionals and are used in many schools and treatment clinics. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a notable behavioral treatment for people with ASD. ABA encourages desired behaviors and discourages undesired behaviors to improve a variety of skills. Progress is tracked and measured with data collection. (CDC)
The International Behavior Analysis Organization® (IBAO®) is an international applied behavior analysis credentialing organization whose mission is to provide behavior analysts and behavioral technicians living outside North America with the credentialing standards needed for professional practice in applied behavior analysis. By establishing and maintaining educational, experiential, examination, and practice standards, the IBAO® will serve as the certification organization for International Applied Behavior Analysis practitioners.
Applied Behavior Analysis in Ethiopia and Beyond (ABAEB) is an organization that made its mission to disseminate the science of applied behavior analysis in Ethiopia and other places where a high-quality ABA service is needed for the autism community by providing comprehensive training, education, workshops, mentorship, consultation, resources, and support.
You can become a behavior analysis practitioner by studying behavior analysis or behavioral sciences at all university levels, or you can earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, and/or other related programs before obtaining a postgraduate degree in behavioral analysis.
